Understanding the fuel system on your Motorcycle

Storage and delivery of fuel to the cylinder chamber, where it can be combined with air, evaporated, and burned to produce energy, are the two main duties of the fuel system. A fuel tank holds the fuel, this fuel is delivered to the cylinder chamber for combustion by a fuel pump after being drawn from the tank via fuel lines, passing through a fuel filter on the way to the fuel injector.

Main components of a fuel system

Fuel Tank

The fuel tank is the main storage for the fuel that runs the vehicle.

Fuel Injectors

Sprays a fine mist of fuel into the combustion chamber of each cylinder or throttle body, depending on the design.

The fuel injectors are driven by the fuel pump and their job is to spray a fuel and air mixture into the combustion chamber, ready to be ignited to produce power to the driven wheels. The fuel injectors are basically a nozzle, with a valve attached, the nozzle creates a spray of fuel

Fuel Hoses

The Fuel Lines connect all of the various Fuel System components.

Fuel Pump

Your motorcycle’s fuel pump is a crucial component of the fuel tank. It has an electric motor and uses fuel lines to deliver fuel at high pressure to the engine’s fuel injectors. The fuel pump’s operation is controlled by the motorcycles ECU. In the event of an accident the fuel pump can be shut off to reduce the likelihood of an engine fire starting.

Fuel Filter

The fuel filter is the key to a properly functioning and clean fuel delivery system. Most motorcycle manufacturers have a fuel filter fitted for the ones that don’t there are external filters like the Guglatech and the Flo tool funnel types that can also separate contaminated fuel as well as water droplets.

What happens when a fuel pump goes bad

“The symptoms of a faulty fuel pump may be confused with a clogged fuel filter or mis-firing”

There are a number of indicators that a gasoline pump is about to fail. The motorcycle won’t start as a result of the pump’s inability to supply fuel to the engine, which is the most visible symptom. Yet, it’s conceivable that other symptoms would have manifested themselves earlier.

They include an abrupt increase in acceleration due to the pump’s inability to maintain steady fuel pressure, a loss of power when accelerating, and intermittent stuttering when operating at higher speeds.

It’s crucial to get the issue thoroughly identified before you start working. An error code produced by the onboard computer is an excellent place to start. The symptoms of a defective fuel pump may be confused with those of a blocked fuel filter or misfiring.

How much does a new fuel pump cost?
